Drive up Branciforte Drive on a Tuesday evening in September and the parking lot at DeLaveaga is doing something it doesn't do in July. Half the cars belong to people walking toward the disc golf course with bags slung over their shoulders, chasing the last hour of daylight before a Thursday bag tag round. The other half are parked closer to Upper Park Road, where string lights are coming on above the Grove and people are carrying folding chairs toward a show that opened a week ago. Most of the people in that lot have lived in Happy Valley, Branciforte, or Glen Canyon long enough to think of DeLaveaga as one thing or the other. The course, or the theater. Not both, and definitely not both at the same time, in the same month, after Labor Day.
That assumption is the thing worth correcting. This park has spent all of 2026 building toward exactly this kind of overlap, and September is when it actually shows up.
Two Headline Events Already Happened. The Calendar Kept Going.
If you were only half paying attention this year, you probably caught two pieces of DeLaveaga news. In May, the Disc Golf Pro Tour named the Santa Cruz Masters Cup a featured stop on its 2026 Q-Series, and the 40th Annual Masters Cup played out on the course May 15 through 17, with a $10,000 purse and a format that's been running at DeLaveaga since 1986. Then in late July, the course closed to the public entirely, July 29 through August 1, so it could host the 25th Annual Deaf Disc Golf National Championships. Both were real, both drew people from outside the county, and both are now finished for the year.
What doesn't show up in that summary is what the disc golf club does when the tournaments leave town. DeLaveaga Disc Golf Club has run a monthly tournament on the first Saturday of every month since 1984, and September's falls on the 5th, same as it has for four decades, followed by October's on the 3rd. The headline events are the ones that make news. The monthly ones are the ones that make this a neighborhood course rather than a stop on a tour, and they don't stop just because the cameras left.
The Fall Season Nobody Announced Loudly
Something similar is true on the other side of the park, and it's a bigger shift than most residents have clocked. Three years ago, under new artistic director Charles Pasternak, Santa Cruz Shakespeare ran what most companies run: three shows across a summer. Since then, Pasternak has more than doubled the company's offerings, adding a two-show fall repertory, a December production, and a spring show to the traditional summer lineup. The 2026 season is where that expansion fully lands. Five productions now run in rotating repertory in the Audrey Stanley Grove from July 11 through October 4, longer than the Grove's season has ever stretched.
The part that matters for anyone who lives within walking distance is what's actually on stage right now. The summer shows, Much Ado About Nothing, Macbeth, and Fences, opened between mid-July and July 30. Fences carries its own weight beyond the schedule. It's the first August Wilson play the company has staged in its history, with Derrick Lee Weeden as Troy Maxson and Carolyn Ratteray as Rose. Director Susan Dalian put it plainly in her director's note, saying Wilson's work "belongs in conversation with the great dramatic literature of the world." The fall pair is what just opened. Noël Coward's Private Lives began September 5. Jason Robert Brown's musical The Last Five Years followed on September 12. Neither existed on this stage a month ago, and both are running in rotation with the summer shows through the first week of October.
Layer on top of that the Monday Night Revels and the newer Community Revels, one-night bookings that run through September 29 and mix touring acts with local Santa Cruz performers, plus a Fringe Series staged reading on September 17. None of this requires a special trip. It's the same 200 acres the disc golf monthly tournament runs on, the same week.
What's Actually Running in the Park This Month
If you're trying to figure out what to walk into without checking three separate calendars, here's what overlaps in September:
- Disc golf's monthly club tournament, first Saturday of the month, September 5
- Private Lives (Noël Coward) and The Last Five Years (Jason Robert Brown), in rotation with the summer shows through October 4
- Community and Monday Night Revels at the Grove, running through September 29
- A Fringe Series staged reading, September 17
- Line 38, the Grove's food and drink stand, open two hours before evening shows and one hour before matinees, now also selling gourmet picnic baskets for anyone who wants to eat on the lawn before curtain
None of this is new construction or a grand reopening. It's the same park doing more at once than it used to, because the theater season got longer while the disc golf calendar stayed exactly as steady as it's always been.
Where the Two Sides of the Park Actually Meet
The clearest physical overlap is the Grille at DeLaveaga, the restaurant inside the golf clubhouse that finished a full renovation a few years back. Co-owner Jamie Loustalot worked with Testorff Construction to rebuild the space into a 3,400 square foot dining room with a new kitchen, a custom bar, and a fireplace, while keeping a hand carved tree sculpture and the original chandeliers as the one visible link to what the room used to be. Loustalot later said of the build, "the entire team was amazing to work with, from the office team to the front line builders." These days it's Chef Adam drawing the local praise, particularly for the Wagyu steak and eggs and the artichoke beignets, on a patio that looks straight out over the fairways.
Walk or drive a few minutes off the park and North Branciforte Avenue has its own cluster worth knowing before or after a round or a curtain. Sugo Italian Pasta Bar, Sampa Brazilian Kitchen, and Lillian's Italian Kitchen sit within a few blocks of each other on that stretch. Over in Branciforte Plaza, Aki Fresh recently took over the space that Ristorante Italiano held for years, which is the kind of turnover that only shows up if you're actually driving past that plaza on a regular basis.
The Point Isn't That DeLaveaga Got Busier
It's that the park stopped taking turns. For most of its history, DeLaveaga's two identities ran on separate clocks: disc golf's biggest weekends in spring and midsummer, Shakespeare's season wrapped up before Labor Day. Neither side really touched the other's calendar. The 2026 season changed that by simply running longer, and the disc golf club's decades-old monthly rhythm never needed to change at all to end up sharing September with it.
If you've lived in Happy Valley, Branciforte, or Glen Canyon for a while and think of DeLaveaga as the place you go for one specific thing, September is worth a second look. The course is still running its normal Saturday tournament. The Grove is in the middle of shows that didn't exist a month ago. And the whole thing is walkable from streets you already know.
